Acting Regardless of the Condition

Use 不管……，都/也…… to present different possible circumstances and say that the following action, decision, or fact remains valid across them. This lesson focuses on the conditional compound-sentence pattern listed for level 4 in the supplied outline.

Result-clause predicate

Example sentence

Bùguǎn tiānqì duō lěng, wǒmen dōu àn jìhuà chūfā.

No matter how cold the weather is, we will set off according to plan.

Correct target-pattern example; 都 presents the result as applying across the possible degrees of cold.

A common mistake

Bùguǎn tiānqì duō lěng, dōu wǒmen àn jìhuà chūfā.

Intended meaning: No matter how cold the weather is, we will set off according to plan.

都 is misplaced before the explicit subject 我们.

Corrected example:

## Meaning: the result holds across possibilities

不管 introduces a condition that may vary or remain unknown. The second clause states what still happens, is true, or is intended in all the relevant cases. In English, the relationship often means “no matter …” or “regardless of ….” The speaker is not predicting which condition will occur; the point is that the result does not depend on that choice.

Bùguǎn tiānqì duō lěng, wǒmen dōu àn jìhuà chūfā.

No matter how cold the weather is, we will set off according to plan.

Correct target-pattern example; 都 presents the result as applying across the possible degrees of cold.

The example keeps the departure plan unchanged across the possible degrees of cold in the context. It does not by itself make a separate claim about every other weather condition.

## Formation: put the condition first

Result-clause predicate

Place 不管 before the condition clause. The condition can name a choice, ask an embedded question, or describe a degree that may vary. After the comma, state the result. Include 都 or 也 in that result clause to mark that it applies despite the condition. The result can refer to a different subject, as in the pattern’s result-subject slot.

- Choice: 不管你选哪条路 (“no matter which road you choose”).

- Open question: 不管会议几点结束 (“no matter what time the meeting ends”).

- Alternative states: 不管你有没有时间 (“whether or not you have time”).

- Variable degree: 不管天气多冷 (“however cold the weather is”).

Bùguǎn huìyì jǐ diǎn jiéshù, Lín jīnglǐ dōu huì bǎ jìlù fā gěi dàjiā.

No matter what time the meeting ends, Manager Lin will send the notes to everyone.

Correct target-pattern example with an embedded question about the meeting’s ending time.

## 都 and 也 in the result clause

Both 都 and 也 can mark that the result applies despite the stated condition. 都 commonly presents the result as covering the full set of possible cases. 也 can highlight that the result still applies or add it to what has already been said. They overlap in this pattern, but they are not interchangeable in every sentence: the best choice depends on the speaker’s emphasis and the surrounding context. Learn the shared pattern first, then notice which particle sounds natural in a particular situation.

Bùguǎn tiānqì duō lěng, wǒmen dōu àn jìhuà chūfā.

No matter how cold the weather is, we will set off according to plan.

Correct target-pattern example; 都 presents the result as applying across the possible degrees of cold.

Bùguǎn nǐ xuǎn nǎ tiáo lù, wǒ yě huì péi nǐ zǒu dào chēzhàn.

No matter which road you choose, I will still walk with you to the station.

Correct target-pattern example; 也 presents the result as still applying.

The condition clause may contain an embedded question word such as 哪 or 几点. The whole sentence can still be a statement: the embedded question identifies possible circumstances rather than asking the listener to answer it. The sentence below states the speaker’s intention, even though the condition mentions whether the listener has time.

Bùguǎn nǐ yǒu méiyǒu shíjiān, wǒ dōu xiǎng xiān tīngting nǐ de yìjiàn.

Whether or not you have time, I still want to hear your opinion first.

Correct target-pattern example. The whole sentence is a statement of intention, not a request for an answer about the listener’s schedule.

## Contrast with ordinary conditions and check 都 placement

Compare 要是天气变暖，我们就出发: departure is linked to one particular condition. 不管天气多冷，我们都按计划出发 instead keeps the plan across degrees of cold. Do not conclude that every 就 creates an if–then relation: 不管你怎么说，我就按原计划办 can use 就 to stress insistence. The learner-error sentence below tests a genuine word-order problem: 都 belongs after the result-clause subject 我们.

Bùguǎn tiānqì duō lěng, dōu wǒmen àn jìhuà chūfā.

Intended meaning: No matter how cold the weather is, we will set off according to plan.

都 is misplaced before the explicit subject 我们.

Corrected example:

Bùguǎn tiānqì duō lěng, wǒmen dōu àn jìhuà chūfā.

No matter how cold the weather is, we will set off according to plan.

Correct target-pattern example; 都 presents the result as applying across the possible degrees of cold.

Use the target pattern when your intended point is “the result stays the same whatever the condition.” If you mean that one consequence follows when a particular condition is met, a different conditional pattern may be more suitable.

## A practical way to form your own sentence

Identify the alternatives or varying degree after 不管, then state what remains true across that range. With an explicit result-clause subject, put 都 or 也 after it. Contrast this with describing a consequence associated with one particular condition; do not confuse an ordinary “if” statement with an exclusive “only if” requirement.

## Frequently asked questions

**Does a question word in the condition clause make the whole sentence a question?**

No. A question word can introduce an unknown or variable detail inside the condition. The complete sentence can still be a statement about a result that holds regardless.

**Can I always replace 都 with 也, or 也 with 都?**

No. Both occur in this pattern, but they can carry different emphasis and depend on context. 都 often highlights coverage of all cases; 也 often highlights that the result still applies or adds it to prior information.

**Where should 都 go when the result clause names its subject?**

Place it after the subject and before the predicate: 我们都按计划出发. The learner error 都我们按计划出发 has that order reversed. A sentence with 就 should be interpreted in its own context rather than automatically marked wrong.
