# Verbs, Verb Phrases, Adjectives, and Adjective Phrases as Subjects (HSK 3)

In Mandarin Chinese, verbs, verb phrases, adjectives, and adjective phrases can stand directly at the beginning of a sentence as the subject without changing their form.

Verb / Verb Phrase (Subject) Evaluative or Resulting Predicate

Example sentence

游泳对身体很好。

Yóuyǒng duì shēntǐ hěn hǎo.

Swimming is very good for the body.

A single verb (游泳) functions directly as the subject.

A common mistake

× 诚实的很重要。

Chéngshí de hěn zhòngyào.

Incorrect when trying to mean 'Honesty is very important.'

Incorrect in this context: adding 的 turns 诚实 into 'the honest one(s)', which fails to express the abstract quality of honesty. Replace with 诚实很重要。

Corrected example: 诚实很重要。

## Core Concept: Actions and Qualities as Subjects

In English, if you want to make an action or an adjective the subject of a sentence, you almost always have to change its grammatical form. For example, 'swim' becomes 'swimming' or 'to swim', and 'honest' becomes the abstract noun 'honesty'. In Mandarin Chinese, words do not change form to fit different grammatical slots.

Within the HSK Level 3 grammar outline, the sentence constituent category (句子成分) specifies that verbs, verb phrases, adjectives, and adjective phrases can directly serve as the subject (主语) of a sentence. When placed in the subject position before the main predicate, these words and phrases naturally name an activity, behaviour, state, or quality that the rest of the sentence describes or evaluates.

## 1. Verbs and Verb Phrases as Subjects

A single verb or a longer verb phrase (such as a verb with an object, an adverbial time word, or a resultative complement) can occupy the subject slot at the start of a sentence. The predicate that follows typically comments on that action—stating whether it is difficult, beneficial, tiring, or what it requires or causes.

Verb / Verb Phrase (Subject) Evaluative or Resulting Predicate

游泳对身体很好。

Yóuyǒng duì shēntǐ hěn hǎo.

Swimming is very good for the body.

A single verb (游泳) functions directly as the subject.

每天跑步让我的身体更健康。

Měitiān pǎobù ràng wǒ de shēntǐ gèng jiànkāng.

Running every day makes my body healthier.

A verb phrase modified by a time word (每天跑步) acts as the subject.

学好汉语需要很多时间。

Xuéhǎo Hànyǔ xūyào hěn duō shíjiān.

Learning Chinese well requires a lot of time.

A verb-complement-object phrase (学好汉语) acts as the subject before the main verb 需要.

Notice that inside a verb phrase functioning as a subject, normal internal word order still applies. Time words like 每天 (every day) still come before the verb 跑步 (to run), and objects like 汉语 (Chinese) still follow the verb and its complement 学好 (to learn well). Once the entire verb phrase is assembled, it simply sits in the subject position in front of the main predicate.

## 2. Adjectives and Adjective Phrases as Subjects

Similarly, a standalone adjective or an adjective phrase (an adjective modified by degree adverbs like 太 'too' or negation like 不 'not') can act as the subject. This pattern is especially common when making general statements about personal qualities, attitudes, or emotional states.

Adjective / Adjective Phrase (Subject) Evaluative or Resulting Predicate

诚实是最重要的。

Chéngshí shì zuì zhòngyào de.

Honesty is the most important thing.

A standalone adjective (诚实) serves as the subject representing an abstract quality.

太着急没有用。

Tài zháojí méiyǒu yòng.

Being too anxious is useless.

An adjective phrase modified by a degree adverb (太着急) acts as the subject.

不认真会影响你的工作。

Bù rènzhēn huì yǐngxiǎng nǐ de gōngzuò.

Not being conscientious will affect your work.

A negated adjective phrase (不认真) acts as the subject.

When a bare adjective like 诚实 (honest) is the subject, you do not add 很 (hěn) inside the subject itself unless you specifically mean a high degree of that quality (such as 太着急 'being too anxious').

## 3. Sentence Structure and Predicate Restrictions

Choose a predicate that makes sense with the activity, state or quality named by the subject. Evaluations, requirements and consequences are common, as in 游泳很好 or 学好汉语需要时间, but they are not the only possibilities. An activity can also be scheduled or brought to an end. The key is a coherent meaning, not a closed list of allowed predicate verbs.

- Evaluative adjective phrases: 很好 (is very good), 很重要 (is very important), 很容易 (is very easy).

- Judgement or existence verbs: 是...的 (is...), 没有用 (is useless), 有好处 (has benefits).

- Causative or requirement verbs: 让... (makes...), 需要... (requires...), 会影响... (will affect...).

- Scope and position: keep the subject phrase together before the main predicate. An adverb such as 也 or 都 that modifies the main comment goes with that predicate; 很 before 重要 is part of 很重要, not part of a preceding subject such as 诚实.

## 4. Useful Contrasts and Common Pitfalls

Do not add 的 automatically to make a verb or adjective into an abstract subject. A headless 的 phrase selects an understood referent, such as a person, a thing or an idea, according to context. Thus 诚实的 may mean “the honest one(s)”, whereas 诚实 directly names honesty. The problem in the example is the mismatch with the intended meaning, not that 的 can only refer to physically concrete objects.

诚实很重要。

Chéngshí hěn zhòngyào.

Honesty is very important.

Correct replacement: use the bare adjective 诚实 directly as the subject.

Scope Note: In the patterns on this page, the subject is an action or quality without its own explicit grammatical subject (for example, 'running every day' or 'being impatient'). When a full clause with its own subject and predicate acts as the subject of a larger sentence (a subject-predicate phrase as subject, 主谓短语作主语), that is categorized as a separate grammar point in the syllabus.

## Frequently asked questions

**Do I need to add anything to a Chinese verb to translate English '-ing' or 'to' when it is the subject?**

No. Chinese verbs and verb phrases go directly into the subject slot without any suffix or particle. Both 'Swimming is good' and 'To swim is good' use the bare verb 游泳 as the subject.

**If a verb phrase is the subject, where does its object go?**

It stays right after the verb inside the subject phrase, just as it normally would. For example, in 学好汉语需要很多时间 ('Learning Chinese well takes a lot of time'), 汉语 follows 学好, and the entire phrase 学好汉语 serves as the subject.

**Why doesn't an adjective subject like 诚实 need 很 in front of it?**

诚实 names the quality directly, so no 很 is needed to make it a subject. In 诚实很重要, 很 modifies the predicate 重要, not the subject. A degree marker such as 太 or a negator such as 不 may be part of an adjective phrase used as subject when that degree or negation is intended, as in 太着急没有用 or 不认真会影响工作.
