# HSK 3 Grammar: Appositive Phrases (同位短语)

An appositive phrase (同位短语, tóngwèi duǎnyǔ) joins two nominal elements side by side so that both refer to the exact same person, place, or thing, functioning together as a single unit in a sentence.

Noun Phrase A (Role / Pronoun / Group) Noun Phrase B (Name / Quantity / Specific Identity)

Example sentence

我们一家人都喜欢旅行。

Wǒmen yì jiā rén dōu xǐhuan lǚxíng.

Our whole family likes traveling.

我们 (we) and 一家人 (one family) refer to the exact same group of people and act together as the subject.

A common mistake

× 我的弟弟的小王今年上大学。

Wǒ de dìdi de Xiǎo Wáng jīnnián shàng dàxué.

[Intended: My younger brother Xiao Wang is starting university this year.]

For the intended single person, omit 的 between 弟弟 and 小王: 我的弟弟小王今年上大学。 The first 的 after 我 can remain or be omitted; it is not the source of the problem.

Corrected example: 我弟弟小王今年上大学。

## What Is an Appositive Phrase (同位短语)?

In the HSK 3 syllabus outline, 同位短语 (tóngwèi duǎnyǔ, appositive phrase) appears under other phrase structure types. An appositive phrase consists of two words or noun phrases placed directly next to each other that refer to the exact same entity in the real world. Because both parts point to the same referent, they share a single grammatical role in the sentence, acting together as one subject, object, or modifier.

Noun Phrase A (Role / Pronoun / Group) Noun Phrase B (Name / Quantity / Specific Identity)

Unlike English, which often separates an appositive with commas (such as "my younger brother, Xiao Wang"), everyday Mandarin typically places the two nouns side by side without any pause, punctuation, or connecting word. The first part usually establishes a pronoun, relationship, or general category, while the second part identifies the specific name, count, or emphasis—or vice versa, depending on the pattern.

## Core Patterns and Natural Usage

At the intermediate level, appositive phrases cluster around four reliable everyday combinations. Mastering these patterns helps you pack clear background information into a sentence without needing extra clauses.

- Personal pronoun + group or quantity noun: A plural pronoun like 我们 (wǒmen), 你们 (nǐmen), or 他们 (tāmen) is followed immediately by a phrase specifying who or how many people are in that group, such as 一家人 (yì jiā rén, the whole family), 两个 (liǎng gè, the two of them), or 大家 (dàjiā, everyone).

- Relationship or role + proper name: A kinship term or job title comes first to explain who the person is, followed directly by their name. Notice that the generic category precedes the specific name.

- General description + proper noun (or proper noun + category): Phrases identifying a famous place, date, or institution pair the descriptive role with the name, such as 中国的首都北京 (Zhōngguó de shǒudū Běijīng, China's capital Beijing).

- Personal pronoun + 自己 (zìjǐ): Adding 自己 directly after a pronoun creates an emphatic appositive meaning "oneself" (myself, yourself, himself).

我们一家人都喜欢旅行。

Wǒmen yì jiā rén dōu xǐhuan lǚxíng.

Our whole family likes traveling.

我们 (we) and 一家人 (one family) refer to the exact same group of people and act together as the subject.

我弟弟小王今年上大学。

Wǒ dìdi Xiǎo Wáng jīnnián shàng dàxué.

My younger brother Xiao Wang is starting university this year.

Correct appositive phrase: 我弟弟 (my younger brother) and 小王 (Xiao Wang) are placed directly side by side to identify the same person.

中国的首都北京有很多名胜古迹。

Zhōngguó de shǒudū Běijīng yǒu hěn duō míngshèng gǔjì.

China's capital, Beijing, has many scenic spots and historical sites.

中国的首都 (China's capital) and 北京 (Beijing) refer to the same city.

Personal Pronoun 自己

这件事你应该问他自己。

Zhè jiàn shì nǐ yīnggāi wèn tā zìjǐ.

You should ask him directly about this matter.

他 (him) and 自己 (self) form a tight appositive unit emphasizing the person himself.

## Important Contrasts and Structural Limits

Because Chinese puts words together without inflection, learners sometimes confuse appositive phrases with two other noun phrase types: attributive phrases (偏正短语, piānzhèng duǎnyǔ) and coordinate phrases (联合短语, liánhé duǎnyǔ). Testing whether the two parts refer to the exact same entity resolves the confusion immediately.

First, compare an appositive phrase with an attributive phrase using 的 (de). In 我弟弟小王 (wǒ dìdi Xiǎo Wáng), "my younger brother" and "Xiao Wang" are the exact same person—only one individual is going to university. However, if you place 的 between a name and a kinship term, as in 小王的弟弟 (Xiǎo Wáng de dìdi), Xiao Wang is the possessor and his younger brother is a second, different person.

小王的弟弟今年上大学。

Xiǎo Wáng de dìdi jīnnián shàng dàxué.

Xiao Wang's younger brother is starting university this year.

Contrast example: This is an attributive/possessive phrase, not an appositive phrase. Here the brother is a different person from Xiao Wang.

Second, compare an appositive phrase with a coordinate phrase. If someone says 我弟弟和小王 (wǒ dìdi hé Xiǎo Wáng, my younger brother and Xiao Wang), the conjunction 和 (hé) signals two distinct people doing the action together. You cannot insert 和 between the two parts of an appositive phrase without turning one person into two.

For the tight pronoun-and-count pattern, use 我们三个人 rather than simply reversing it to 三个人我们. Other appositive patterns can put a description before or after a name, with pauses or punctuation if needed. Learn each phrase’s conventional order rather than applying one rule to every pair of nouns.

## Common Learner Mistake: Overusing 的 Between Appositives

To say that “my younger brother” and “Xiao Wang” identify the same person, place them together: 我的弟弟小王. Inserting 的 between 弟弟 and 小王 suggests a different relation, such as someone associated with the brother, and does not convey the intended identification. The problem is the intended relation, not a general ban on proper names appearing after 的.

## Frequently asked questions

**Can I reverse the order of the two nouns in an appositive phrase?**

It depends on the pattern. 我们三个人 has the pronoun before the count. A descriptive name phrase can use 我朋友李明 or, with an explanatory pause, 李明，我的朋友. Conventional forms such as 王老师 have their own order; grammatical labels for some name-and-title combinations vary across analyses.

**Why does 中国的首都北京 contain 的 if appositive phrases do not use 的 to join their two parts?**

In 中国的首都北京, the particle 的 lives inside the first noun phrase (中国的首都, China's capital). The appositive boundary itself—between 首都 (capital) and 北京 (Beijing)—has no 的.

**Does learning 同位短语 at HSK 3 mean I will be asked to label grammar terms on an exam?**

The table lists 同位短语 as curriculum content. It does not specify every question format or promise whether a grammar label will be asked. Focus on recognizing and using the structures, and check the examination information relevant to your booked test.
