# Using 是……的 to Express a View or Attitude

In this HSK 3 outline point, 是……的 can frame a speaker’s evaluation or attitude toward a situation. Learn to recognize the framing, place it in context, and distinguish it from a plain description.

Person or situation being evaluated 是 Speaker’s view or attitude 的

Example sentence

我觉得这个办法是好的。

Wǒ juéde zhège bànfǎ shì hǎo de.

I think this method is good.

A direct evaluation introduced by 我觉得.

## What this pattern does

The HSK 3 outline identifies this numbered use of 是……的 as emphasizing the speaker’s view or attitude. The speaker is evaluating or reacting to a situation, rather than simply reporting an event. The outline gives the scope and level for this lesson; it does not establish which examination version is currently administered at any test centre.

The form can emphasize a judgment, conviction or assurance. 我觉得 can introduce a personal assessment, but it is not required: 我是会帮你的 emphasizes willingness or a promise to help. A sentence such as 我很高兴你能来 can express an attitude too, but without 是…的 it is a valid contrast, not an example of this frame.

## How to form the evaluation

Person or situation being evaluated 是 Speaker’s view or attitude 的

Place the person or situation being evaluated before 是, then give the view or attitude, and finish with 的. A suitable frame is 我觉得 + [situation] + 是 + [evaluation] + 的. The words after 是 carry the evaluation; 的 closes this framing. The exact wording can vary with the idea you want to express.

Use this pattern when you want listeners to hear your judgment or reaction. It works naturally in conversation when explaining what you think about a plan, a choice, or another situation.

## Examples in context

我觉得这个办法是好的。

Wǒ juéde zhège bànfǎ shì hǎo de.

I think this method is good.

A direct evaluation introduced by 我觉得.

我觉得这样做是不太安全的。

Wǒ juéde zhèyàng zuò shì bú tài ānquán de.

I think doing it this way is not very safe.

The speaker expresses a concern about the situation.

别担心，我是会帮你的。

Bié dānxīn, wǒ shì huì bāng nǐ de.

Don’t worry. I really will help you.

The speaker uses 是…的 to emphasize an assurance. This does not describe how a past event happened.

这样浪费时间是很可惜的。

Zhèyàng làngfèi shíjiān shì hěn kěxī de.

It really is a pity to waste time like this.

是…的 frames an evaluation of wasting time. The predicate is 很可惜.

## A useful contrast

Compare 这个办法很好 with 这个办法是好的. Both can evaluate the method; the latter gives the judgment a more affirming or emphatic frame in a suitable context. 我觉得 may be added to either. Do not attribute the whole difference merely to 我觉得 or assume that only the 是…的 version is an opinion.

Another use of 是…的 focuses on details of an established event: 他是昨天来的 emphasizes when he came. In 我是会帮你的, by contrast, the speaker emphasizes an assurance about helping. The whole clause and context distinguish these uses; neither the mere presence of 是…的 nor a question mark identifies the function by itself.

- Ask: is the speaker evaluating or reacting to a situation?

- Look for an expressed view or attitude, often signaled by 我觉得 or an evaluative word.

- If the sentence asks for event details or simply describes something, it may serve another purpose.

## A practical way to use it

When speaking, name the situation first, state your evaluation after 是, and add 的 at the end. For example, you can respond to a proposed plan by saying what you think of it. Choose a word that genuinely expresses your judgment or feeling, and give enough context for listeners to understand what you are evaluating.

Before using the pattern, check that you are expressing a view or attitude. If you only want to describe a quality, a plain adjective sentence may be more direct; if you want event information, use the relevant question form.

## Frequently asked questions

**Does every sentence expressing an opinion need 是……的?**

No. A plain statement such as 这个办法很好 can also express an evaluation. The pattern taught here frames the evaluation with 是……的.

**Does this lesson cover every use of 是……的?**

No. It covers the outline’s numbered use for emphasizing the speaker’s view or attitude. Other uses, including questions seeking event details, have different purposes.

**What kinds of words can express an attitude?**

Choose a natural evaluative predicate such as 很可惜, or a modal predicate such as 会帮你 for an assurance. An emotion word alone does not prove that a sentence uses 是…的; check the whole frame.
