# Using 把 with 给 to Show Who Receives Something

This lesson explains the HSK 3 pattern 主语+把+宾语1+动词（+给）+宾语2. It shows how the construction presents an affected object and, in common giving or handing situations, identifies its recipient.

Subject 把 First object: item or information Verb （给） Second object: recipient in these transfer examples

Example sentence

我把这本书送给了老师。

Wǒ bǎ zhè běn shū sòng gěi le lǎoshī.

I gave this book to the teacher.

Correct example. The book is the first object; the teacher is the recipient.

## Meaning and focus

In this pattern, the speaker presents an object as the thing handled, transferred, or acted on, then gives the verb and a second object. In sentences with a transfer verb, that second object commonly names the recipient. The construction keeps attention on what happens to the first object while making the recipient clear.

我把这本书送给了老师。

Wǒ bǎ zhè běn shū sòng gěi le lǎoshī.

I gave this book to the teacher.

Correct example. The book is the first object; the teacher is the recipient.

她把咖啡递给了客人。

Tā bǎ kāfēi dì gěi le kèrén.

She handed the coffee to the guest.

Correct example. The guest receives the coffee.

## Build the sentence

Use Subject + 把 + Item/Information + Verb (+ 给) + Recipient. Whether 给 appears depends on the particular verb construction. 递给客人 and 交给前台 name a recipient after 给; 告诉我 already takes the person receiving the information, as in 请把你的地址告诉我. The parentheses describe alternatives in the overall pattern, not permission to add or delete 给 mechanically in every sentence.

Subject 把 First object: item or information Verb （给） Second object: recipient in these transfer examples

请把你的地址告诉我。

Qǐng bǎ nǐ de dìzhǐ gàosu wǒ.

Please tell me your address.

Correct request. The address is the first object; the speaker is the recipient of the information.

他把钥匙交给了前台。

Tā bǎ yàoshi jiāo gěi le qiántái.

He handed the key to the front desk.

Correct example. The front desk is the recipient.

我把表格交给了经理。

Wǒ bǎ biǎogé jiāo gěi le jīnglǐ.

I handed the form to the manager.

Correct example. The manager receives the form.

## When it fits

Use this form when the context makes the object and the action on it clear, and you want to foreground that object before naming the recipient or destination of the transfer. It works in statements and requests. A question can also use the pattern when the speaker is asking about the recipient or another detail; the question words and context indicate what is unknown.

- A completed handover or delivery: identify what was transferred and to whom.

- A request or instruction: put the item before the verb, then name its recipient.

- Check that the verb naturally supports the intended action and that the second object has a clear role.

## Contrast with recipient-first wording

Compare 我送给了老师这本书 with 我把这本书送给了老师. The first puts the recipient before the book after the verb; the second brings the identifiable book before the verb and recipient. Both can refer to the same transfer. 把 changes how the information is organized, rather than making the recipient-first version incorrect.

Keep the scope narrow: this lesson covers the two-object pattern with an optional 给 after the verb. It does not cover 把 sentences that place an object at a location or use a result or directional complement.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is 给 always required?**

No: 请把你的地址告诉我 works without an extra 给. Other common models here use 送给, 递给 or 交给. Learn the verb-and-recipient combination that fits the meaning; the overall optional notation does not mean that either choice sounds equally natural with every verb.

**Is a recipient-first sentence wrong if I can use 把?**

No. 我送给了老师这本书 is a possible recipient-first sentence. 我把这本书送给了老师 instead foregrounds the book. Choose the version that fits the focus and what the listener can identify.
