# Using 把 to Put Things in Places

This lesson explains the HSK 3 pattern 主语 + 把 + 宾语 + 动词 + 在/到 + 处所. Use it to present an object as being handled and placed or moved to a location. Learn how 在 and 到 guide the meaning, how to form a question, and when ordinary subject–verb–object order is more natural.

subject 把 object verb 在/到 place

Example sentence

我把书放在桌子上。

Wǒ bǎ shū fàng zài zhuōzi shàng。

I put the book on the table.

## What this pattern says

In this pattern, 把 brings the object forward as the thing someone handles, then the verb describes placing or moving it in relation to a location. The location phrase completes the idea: it tells where the object is put or where it is taken. The sentence usually presents a concrete change or result involving that object, rather than simply naming an activity.

The HSK 3 outline lists this particular location pattern. Its focus is the placement or destination of an object; other 把 patterns describe other kinds of effects. Here, make the object and the intended location clear.

subject 把 object verb 在/到 place

## Build the sentence in order

Start with the person or thing doing the action, then use 把 before the object. Follow the object with a verb that can describe putting or moving it, and finish with 在 or 到 plus a location. The object should be identifiable from the situation or clear enough for the listener to understand what is being handled. For example, a speaker might point to a familiar book or refer to a car everyone is discussing.

- 放 (put) works when you place something somewhere.

- 停 (park) works for bringing a vehicle to a stopping place.

- 搬 (move or carry) works when you move an object to another location.

- Choose a location phrase that makes the placement or destination clear.

我把书放在桌子上。

Wǒ bǎ shū fàng zài zhuōzi shàng。

I put the book on the table.

## Choose 在 or 到

在 presents the location where the object is placed or kept. In 我把书放在桌子上, the desk is the place where the book ends up. 到 presents a destination or endpoint: 请把车停到学校门口 asks someone to park the car at the school entrance. In natural usage, some verbs and location phrases can occur with either preposition, but the viewpoint differs: 在 highlights the location, while 到 highlights movement or reaching a destination.

请把车停到学校门口。

Qǐng bǎ chē tíng dào xuéxiào ménkǒu。

Please park the car at the school entrance.

## Use it in statements and questions

A statement can describe a completed placement, an instruction, or a plan; context and words such as 了 help show the intended timing. The pattern does not itself require a question form. To ask where an object was placed, put a question word in the location slot and keep the rest of the structure: the listener can identify the object, but the place is unknown.

她把手机放在包里了。

Tā bǎ shǒujī fàng zài bāo lǐ le。

She put her phone in her bag.

In this context, 了 presents the phone’s placement as realized.

你把钥匙放到哪儿了？

Nǐ bǎ yàoshi fàng dào nǎr le？

Where did you put the keys?

哪儿 occupies the unknown location slot; the rest of the 把 pattern remains in place.

我们把椅子搬到窗户旁边。

Wǒmen bǎ yǐzi bān dào chuānghu pángbiān.

We moved the chairs beside the window.

到 presents the destination of moving the chairs. The sentence can describe a plan or a completed move, depending on context.

## Contrast it with ordinary word order

Ordinary word order can also state a location and result: 我在桌子上放了一本书 introduces a book being put on the table. 我把那本书放在桌子上了 foregrounds the identifiable book and where it is placed. Both are grammatical. Choose according to what the listener already knows and what you want to emphasize, rather than assuming that every sentence with “put” needs 把.

Before using the pattern, check three things: the object is clear in context, the verb can describe placing or moving it, and the final phrase supplies a location. Then choose 在 to foreground the place or 到 to foreground the destination.

## Frequently asked questions

**Can any verb go in this pattern?**

No. Use a verb that can naturally describe placing or moving the object in relation to a location, such as 放, 停, or 搬. The location phrase should complete the intended meaning.

**How do I ask where something was put?**

Keep 把 and the verb, and use a location question word such as 哪儿 in the place slot. For example, 你把钥匙放到哪儿了？ asks where the keys were put.

**Are 在 and 到 interchangeable?**

They can both appear with some verbs and places, but they do not give exactly the same viewpoint. 在 highlights the location; 到 highlights reaching a destination. Choose the one that fits what you want to emphasize.
