# Using 把 and 被 to Introduce Agents and Patients (HSK 3)

In the HSK 3 grammar outline, the prepositions 把 (bǎ) and 被 (bèi) are grouped under the function of introducing agents (施事) and patients (受事). While standard Chinese sentences rely on word order alone to show who does what to whom, 把 brings the affected object forward before the verb, and 被 marks the doer in a passive perspective.

Agent (doer) 把 Patient (receiver) Main verb Result / complement

Example sentence

请把窗户关上。

Qǐng bǎ chuānghu guān shàng.

Please close the window.

把 introduces the patient (窗户, the window) before the verb 关, which is followed by the directional result 上.

A common mistake

× 我把那本书看。

Wǒ bǎ nà běn shū kàn.

(Intended: I finished reading that book.)

Incorrect: In a 把 sentence describing how an object is dealt with, a bare monosyllabic verb like 看 cannot stand alone at the end without a result or completion marker. Replace with 我把那本书看完了。

Corrected example: 我把那本书看完了。

## What Are Agents (施事) and Patients (受事)?

In the HSK 3 syllabus outline under prepositions (介词), 把 (bǎ) and 被 (bèi) are listed together under the function of introducing the agent (施事, shīshì) and the patient (受事, shòushì). Understanding these two roles makes both prepositions much easier to control. Note that the Level 3 label reflects the supplied syllabus outline rather than a guarantee about which exam version a specific test center currently administers.

- Agent (施事): The doer or initiator of the action—the person or force that makes the event happen.

- Patient (受事): The receiver or undergoer of the action—the person or thing that is moved, changed, or affected.

- Function of 把 (bǎ): Introduces the patient (受事) right before the verb so the sentence can focus on what happens to that object.

- Function of 被 (bèi): Introduces the agent (施事) after the patient has been moved to the start of the sentence as the main topic.

## Introducing the Patient (受事) with 把

In a basic Chinese sentence, the patient comes after the verb. However, when speakers want to emphasize how a specific, known object is dealt with, relocated, or changed, they use the preposition 把 (bǎ) to pull that patient in front of the verb. The subject at the beginning of the sentence remains the agent (doer), while 把 directly marks the patient.

Agent (doer) 把 Patient (receiver) Main verb Result / complement

请把窗户关上。

Qǐng bǎ chuānghu guān shàng.

Please close the window.

把 introduces the patient (窗户, the window) before the verb 关, which is followed by the directional result 上.

弟弟把那个苹果吃完了。

Dìdi bǎ nàge píngguǒ chī wán le.

My younger brother ate up that apple.

The sentence starts with the agent (弟弟) and uses 把 to introduce the definite patient (那个苹果).

The 把 object is usually identifiable or treated as a particular affected item. It need not already have been mentioned: 他把一只碗打破了 can introduce the bowl for the first time. Do not equate this tendency with a ban on every indefinite noun phrase.

## Introducing the Agent (施事) with 被

When you want to tell the story from the perspective of the patient—the thing or person affected by the action—you place the patient at the very beginning of the sentence. You then use 被 (bèi) to introduce the agent (the doer) before the verb. This corresponds closely to passive sentences in English.

Patient (receiver) 被 Optional agent (doer) Main verb Result / complement

那个苹果被弟弟吃完了。

Nàge píngguǒ bèi dìdi chī wán le.

That apple was eaten up by my younger brother.

The sentence starts with the patient (那个苹果) and uses 被 to introduce the agent (弟弟).

While the primary prepositional role of 被 is to introduce the agent, Chinese also allows you to omit the agent entirely if you do not know who did the action or do not need to say it. In that case, 被 stands directly in front of the verb to signal that the subject is the patient, not the doer.

我的自行车被借走了。

Wǒ de zìxíngchē bèi jiè zǒu le.

Someone has borrowed my bicycle.

When the agent is unknown or unimportant, 被 appears directly before the verb phrase 借走了.

## Contrasting 把 and 被 on the Same Event

Because 把 and 被 introduce opposite semantic roles, you can often describe the exact same real-world event with either word depending on which noun starts the sentence. Comparing the apple examples above shows how the roles swap positions while the core action and result stay identical.

- Start with the doer (agent): Use 把 to introduce the receiver (弟弟 + 把那个苹果 + 吃完了).

- Start with the receiver (patient): Use 被 to introduce the doer (那个苹果 + 被弟弟 + 吃完了).

- Result after the verb: In both sentences, the verb phrase 吃完了 (ate up / finished eating) stays at the end to show what happened to the patient.

## Structural Limits and Common Learner Mistakes

A neutral 把 sentence usually needs a sufficiently developed predicate. That development need not follow the verb: 请把车往前开 is complete with the directional phrase before 开. 被 sentences can also be complete without a following result marker, as in 他经常被人欺负. Learn the patterns in context rather than requiring a result complement after every verb.

我把那本书看完了。

Wǒ bǎ nà běn shū kàn wán le.

I finished reading that book.

Correct replacement: Adding the result complement 完 plus 了 shows the completed outcome on the book.

The basic neutral negative pattern is 没把…… or 没被……, and modal verbs commonly precede 把 or 被. Other scopes and colloquial topic orders exist: 他把我的话不当回事 is possible. The door example below contrasts a conversational order with the clearer neutral 没把 pattern; it does not establish a universal ban on negation after 把.

Starting noun (agent or patient) Negation (没 / 不) 把 / 被 Patient (after 把) or agent (after 被) Main verb Result / complement

他把门没关好。

Tā bǎ mén méi guān hǎo.

He did not close the door properly.

A conversational order with 门 made prominent. For a neutral learner model, prefer 他没把门关好. Do not generalize this preference into a claim that 没 or 不 can never follow 把 and its object.

他没把门关好。

Tā méi bǎ mén guān hǎo.

He didn't close the door properly.

A clear neutral pattern places 没 before 把 to negate the successful closing of the door.

## Frequently asked questions

**Can I use 把 with any verb and object?**

No. You cannot use 把 with verbs that do not affect, move, or change the object, such as verbs of existence or pure perception and emotion like 有 (have), 是 (be), 在 (be at), or 喜欢 (like). It is used when an action disposes of or produces a clear result on a specific patient.

**Is 被 only used for unfortunate or negative events?**

Traditionally, 被 was mostly used for undesirable events (like losing something or getting hurt), and that remains its most common context at HSK 3. In modern Chinese, however, it is also used for neutral or positive events (such as being praised or selected), though the focus is always on how the patient was affected.
