# Disappearance Sentences: Saying What Is Gone

This lesson explains the HSK 3 outline pattern for reporting that a person or thing has disappeared from a location or is no longer there after an action. It covers the sentence order, the role of result complements and 了, natural contexts, and the contrast with an ordinary subject-first sentence.

Location Verb Result complement 了 Quantity phrase Person or thing affected

Example sentence

黑板上擦掉了两个字。

Hēibǎn shang cā diào le liǎng ge zì.

Two characters have been erased from the blackboard.

掉 marks removal. The sentence reports what disappeared from the board, without naming who erased it.

## What this pattern tells the listener

This pattern presents a location as the starting point and reports that someone or something has left, been removed, been used up, or otherwise ceased to be there. The focus is usually on the change in what is present at that location, rather than on who performed the action. It is useful when the listener needs to know what is now missing or gone.

The chosen event must support a disappearance reading, such as 擦掉, 砍掉, 卖掉 or 清理掉. A result complement alone does not guarantee disappearance. 教室里坐满了三十个学生 describes the room becoming occupied, so it is a valid sentence with a different meaning, not an example of students disappearing.

## Build the sentence in this order

Begin with a place expression, often followed by a location word such as 里 or 上. Then give the action verb and a result complement that says what happened to the person or thing. Add 了 after the verb-complement unit, followed by a quantity phrase and the person or thing affected. The quantity phrase counts or measures that final noun.

Location Verb Result complement 了 Quantity phrase Person or thing affected

- The location establishes where the change happened.

- The verb and complement together must describe loss, removal or disappearance in this context; the generic idea of “a result” is not enough.

- 了 marks the occurrence of the change in this pattern; it does not by itself mean that the situation is permanent.

- The quantity phrase and noun come after the verb-complement unit, giving the amount or number of what is now absent or affected.

## See the pattern in context

黑板上擦掉了两个字。

Hēibǎn shang cā diào le liǎng ge zì.

Two characters have been erased from the blackboard.

掉 marks removal. The sentence reports what disappeared from the board, without naming who erased it.

院子里砍掉了两棵树。

Yuànzi lǐ kǎn diào le liǎng kē shù.

Two trees have been cut down in the courtyard.

The location frames the loss of two standing trees; the result complement is 掉.

店里卖掉了三台电脑。

Diàn lǐ mài diào le sān tái diànnǎo.

Three computers have been sold from the shop.

This reports three items sold, not that every computer in the shop has sold out.

衣柜里清理掉了几件旧衣服。

Yīguì lǐ qīnglǐ diào le jǐ jiàn jiù yīfu.

Several old items of clothing have been cleared out of the wardrobe.

The clothes are removed from the wardrobe. This does not say whether they were donated, thrown away or stored elsewhere.

## When to use it, and what to compare

Use it when the location and the removal matter more than who did it: characters erased from a board, trees cut down, shop stock sold or old clothes cleared out. You can ask for the quantity: 黑板上擦掉了几个字？ The question asks for the number erased, not the number still remaining.

Compare 老师擦掉了黑板上的两个字: it identifies the teacher as the actor. 黑板上擦掉了两个字 instead frames the board first and reports the removed characters. Both are valid, but the choice changes what is foregrounded. The quantity does not imply that every character has vanished.

The outline specifies a result complement for this item. Related existence and appearance sentences can look similar, so classify the whole event and meaning rather than a suffix alone. 办公室里丢了一把钥匙 is a natural related report without a separately expressed result complement; it is not the full target formula taught here.

## A practical way to form your own sentence

- Choose a location where something was present.

- Decide what happened to it and select a verb with a result complement that expresses that outcome.

- Add 了 after the verb and result complement.

- Finish with the quantity phrase and the person or thing affected.

- Check that the sentence reports a change at the location, rather than focusing mainly on an actor.

## Frequently asked questions

**Why does the person or thing come after the verb?**

This construction starts with the place and presents the person or thing as what has become absent or affected there. That order helps make the change at the location the focus.

**Does 了 mean the situation will stay that way?**

No. In this pattern, 了 marks the occurrence of the change. Whether the result continues depends on the context.
