# Describing Someone or Something Appearing: HSK 3 存现句3

Introduce a person or thing through an event at a place: someone walks in, a flower emerges, or a new building is completed. Learn the outline’s location-first pattern with a directional or result complement and context-sensitive 了. Distinguish eventive appearance from a continuing state with 着.

Place phrase Verb Directional or result complement Optional 了 marker Quantity phrase Person or thing

Example sentence

门口走进来一个人。

Mén kǒu zǒu jìn lái yí ge rén.

A person walked in through the doorway.

The sentence introduces the person at the end.

## Meaning: introduce what appears

This appearance pattern introduces someone or something through an arrival, emergence, creation or placement event framed by a location. It puts the setting first and the person or thing introduced after the event. Focus on what newly appears or comes into place, rather than merely listing what is already there.

The supplied HSK 3 outline specifies location + verb + directional/result complement + (了) + quantity phrase + person/thing for this item. Its wording sets the scope and level. It does not make 着 a result complement or establish which exam version is currently used by a test centre.

The final noun phrase is typically indefinite or newly introduced: one person, two teachers or a new building. A natural English translation may put that person or thing first. The Chinese location is a scene-setting topic; do not infer its grammatical role from English subject-first order alone.

## Formation and complement choices

Place phrase Verb Directional or result complement Optional 了 marker Quantity phrase Person or thing

A directional complement can show the path, as 进来 does after 走, or an extended emergence meaning, as 出 does after 长. A result complement identifies a result attained by the action, as 成 does in 建成. Match the complement to the verb and scene. An aspect marker such as 着 is a different grammatical category.

In the outlined order, 了 follows the verb-complement combination: 走进来了, 长出了, 建成了. The parentheses do not mean that it can be deleted from every sentence with no change in acceptability or interpretation. A scene-setting narrative can use 门口走进来一个人 without 了. Choose the full wording in context, and do not treat 了 as a past-tense marker.

- Place phrase: identify the setting, such as a doorway, school, tree, room, or tabletop.

- Verb plus complement: describe the arrival, entry, emergence, fall, or resulting appearance.

- Use 了 after the verb-complement group when the sentence’s event presentation calls for it; it does not mark past tense by itself.

- Quantity phrase plus noun: introduce the newly present person or thing.

## Examples in context

门口走进来一个人。

Mén kǒu zǒu jìn lái yí ge rén.

A person walked in through the doorway.

The sentence introduces the person at the end.

The doorway is the scene, and 走进来 describes someone walking in. 一个 marks the person as newly introduced.

教室里走进来了两位新老师。

Jiàoshì lǐ zǒu jìn lái le liǎng wèi xīn lǎoshī.

Two new teachers walked into the classroom.

进来 is the directional complement after 走; 了 follows the complete verb-complement sequence.

The classroom is the setting. 走进来 describes the entrance, and 两位新老师 identifies the two people being introduced.

草地上长出了一朵小花。

Cǎodì shang zhǎng chū le yì duǒ xiǎo huā.

A little flower has grown out of the grass.

出 describes emergence. 一朵小花 introduces the flower after the event.

长出 describes the flower’s emergence. Read 长 as zhǎng here, meaning “grow,” not cháng meaning “long.” 一朵 is the classifier phrase for a flower.

院子里建成了一座新楼。

Yuànzi lǐ jiàn chéng le yí zuò xīn lóu.

A new building has been completed in the courtyard.

成 is a result complement after 建. This introduces the completed building, not merely an existing state with 着.

建成 introduces a completed construction event and 成 is the result complement. Compare 教室里坐着三个学生: that is a valid sentence describing a continuing sitting state, but 着 is an aspect marker, not a directional or result complement. It belongs to the neighboring existence-state use rather than serving as the target eventive example here.

墙上贴上了一张通知。

Qiáng shang tiē shàng le yì zhāng tōngzhī.

A notice has been put up on the wall.

上 after 贴 describes attachment onto the surface. 一张通知 gives the new item and quantity.

贴上 introduces the placement of a notice onto the wall. The number-classifier phrase 一张 comes before 通知. The corresponding ordinary subject-first sentence can mention who put it up, but this version focuses on what appeared on the wall.

## Choosing the pattern in conversation

Use the pattern to report an entrance, emergence, completed creation or placement at a location. You can also ask for the new item or its quantity: 教室里走进来了几位新老师？ The question asks how many teachers entered, not how many are sitting there now. Keep the event and the information sought clear.

- Appearance focus: place first, event next, newly present person or thing last.

- Person or thing already established: ordinary subject-first wording may be more natural when the listener already knows who or what you mean and the sentence is about that subject.

- Directional versus result meaning: use a directional complement to foreground a path; use a result complement when the outcome is the point. Check that the verb and complement form a natural combination.

- Do not confuse this appearance item with the neighboring outline item for disappearance. The supplied scope for this lesson is appearance only.

The place frames the event; it need not itself be new information. Translate the chosen verb and complement accurately: walking in, growing out, being completed and being put up are different events. Do not replace all of them with a static “there is.”

## A practical way to form your own sentence

Start with the location you want the listener to picture. Choose a verb for what happened there, then add a directional or result complement that matches the event. Decide whether the context calls for 了, and finish with a quantity phrase plus the person or thing being introduced. Read the result aloud in meaning: does it report something newly present at that location? If the real focus is an already-known subject, consider a subject-first sentence instead.

## Frequently asked questions

**Does every appearance sentence need 了?**

No. The outline marks 了 in parentheses, and a narrative can say 门口走进来一个人. But optional in an outline formula does not mean that it can be removed mechanically from every finished sentence. Read time and event presentation in context.

**Why does the person or thing come at the end?**

The location sets the scene first, while the final quantity phrase and noun introduce what has appeared there. This is useful when that person or thing is new information.

**Can I ask a question with this pattern?**

Yes. You can ask what or how many people or things appeared, keeping the location and event structure. Choose a question expression that fits the information you want.
