# Pivotal Phrases (兼语短语) in Chinese: Structure, Meaning, and Usage

A pivotal phrase (兼语短语) links a verb-object phrase and a subject-predicate phrase around a shared noun. This shared noun acts as the object of the first verb and the subject of the second action or state.

Subject Causative / Request Verb 1 Pivot Noun (Object 1 / Subject 2) Verb 2 / Adjective Phrase Optional Object 2

Example sentence

我请你喝茶。

Wǒ qǐng nǐ hē chá.

I invite you to drink tea. / Let me treat you to tea.

你 (nǐ) is the pivot: it is the object of 请 (invite) and the subject of 喝茶 (drink tea).

A common mistake

× 妈妈叫弟弟不等一下。

Māma jiào dìdi bù děng yíxià.

Intended: Mom did not tell my younger brother to wait.

This does not express the intended denial of Mom’s request. For “did not tell him to wait”, put 没 before 叫. 不等一下 is also an awkward negative instruction here. This is not a ban on 不 inside every pivotal predicate: 让他不再担心 is natural.

Corrected example: 妈妈没叫弟弟等。

## What Is a Pivotal Phrase (兼语短语)?

In the Level 2 Chinese grammar outline under phrase structure types (短语结构类型), a pivotal phrase (兼语短语) is a compact structure where two clauses overlap on a single noun or pronoun. In Chinese grammar, the term 兼语 literally means a word that holds two grammatical jobs at the same time. It serves as the direct object of the first verb and simultaneously functions as the subject that performs or experiences the second verb or adjective.

Subject Causative / Request Verb 1 Pivot Noun (Object 1 / Subject 2) Verb 2 / Adjective Phrase Optional Object 2

Consider a simple invitation. When you invite a friend to drink tea, your action is inviting, and your friend's action is drinking tea. In English, we usually connect the two parts with the infinitive marker 'to' (invite you to drink). Chinese does not use a linking word between the pivot noun and the second verb; word order alone shows the relationship.

我请你喝茶。

Wǒ qǐng nǐ hē chá.

I invite you to drink tea. / Let me treat you to tea.

你 (nǐ) is the pivot: it is the object of 请 (invite) and the subject of 喝茶 (drink tea).

## Core Usage 1: Invitations, Instructions, and Causatives

The most common pivotal phrases use a first verb that causes, asks, allows, or assigns someone to do something. Because the first verb directs the behavior of the pivot noun, only verbs with causative, permissive, or directive meaning can fill the first verb slot in this pattern.

- 请 (qǐng): to politely invite or request someone to do something.

- 让 (ràng): to let, allow, or tell someone to do something (neutral and very common in speech).

- 叫 (jiào): to tell or order someone to do something, or to cause a reaction (often more direct or informal than 让).

- 派 (pài): to send or assign someone to handle a task or go somewhere.

医生让他多休息。

Yīshēng ràng tā duō xiūxi.

The doctor told him to rest more.

让 (ràng) introduces the instruction, and 他 (tā) is the pivot who rests.

妈妈叫弟弟等一下。

Māma jiào dìdi děng yíxià.

Mom told my younger brother to wait a moment.

叫 (jiào) is used in everyday speech to tell someone to do something.

公司派小王去上海。

Gōngsī pài Xiǎo Wáng qù Shànghǎi.

The company sent Xiao Wang to go to Shanghai.

小王 (Xiǎo Wáng) is sent by the company and is the person who goes to Shanghai.

## Core Usage 2: Introducing Indefinite Nouns with 有

A second major type of pivotal phrase begins with the existential verb 有 (yǒu, there is / there are). In Mandarin, an unidentified or indefinite person or thing (such as 'someone' or 'a friend') rarely stands alone at the very beginning of a sentence as the subject of an action verb. Instead, speakers use 有 to introduce the indefinite noun as a pivot, and then state what that person or thing is doing.

有 Pivot Noun (Object 1 / Subject 2) Verb 2 / Adjective Phrase Optional Object 2

外面有人找你。

Wàimiàn yǒu rén zhǎo nǐ.

There is someone outside looking for you.

有 (yǒu) introduces the indefinite pivot 人 (rén, someone), who performs 找你 (looking for you).

In the example above, 人 (rén, a person/someone) is the object of 有 (there is a person) and simultaneously the subject of 找 (looking for you). A location word like 外面 (outside) or a time word often precedes 有 to set the scene.

## Useful Contrast: Pivotal Phrases vs. Serial Verb Phrases

For the two examples compared here, tracking who does each action distinguishes a pivotal pattern from a serial-verb pattern. But actor identity is not a complete test for every sentence: a verb can instead take a whole subject-predicate clause as its object.

我去商店买苹果。

Wǒ qù shāngdiàn mǎi píngguǒ.

I go to the store to buy apples.

Contrast example (serial verb phrase, not a pivotal phrase): 我 (I) performs both 去 (go) and 买 (buy).

In 我去商店买苹果, 我 performs both actions. In 公司派小王去上海, 小王 is sent and also goes. Compare 我知道他来了: 知道 takes the clause 他来了 as its object, so a different actor alone does not make it pivotal.

## Structural Limits and Common Learner Mistakes

To deny that an instruction occurred, use 没 before the first verb in the past-event example. To report an instruction not to act, 别/不要 is a useful model before the second action. 不 can still occur within a suitable second predicate, such as 让他不再担心. Choose by meaning and the predicate, not by a blanket ban on 不 after the pivot.

妈妈没叫弟弟等。

Māma méi jiào dìdi děng.

Mom did not tell my younger brother to wait.

没 before 叫 denies that Mom issued the instruction. Compare the next example, where Mom does issue a negative instruction.

妈妈叫弟弟别等了。

Māma jiào dìdi bié děng le.

Mom told my younger brother not to wait anymore.

Correct replacement when the second action is a negative command using 别 (bié).

## Frequently asked questions

**Why is it called a pivotal phrase (兼语短语)?**

It is called a pivotal phrase because the middle noun acts like a pivot or hinge between two clauses. It is the object of the first verb and the subject of the second verb at the same time.

**Do I need a word for English 'to' before the second verb?**

No. Unlike English ('ask him to come'), Chinese places the second verb or adjective phrase directly after the pivot noun without any preposition or infinitive marker.

**How can I quickly tell a pivotal phrase apart from a serial verb phrase?**

Start by checking who performs each action in the two patterns taught here. Then check what the first verb takes as its object. 请你来 has pivot 你, while 知道他来了 takes the full clause 他来了 as an object and is a different structure.
