# HSK 2 Special Sentence Pattern: The 是……的 (shì...de) Construction for Time, Place, Manner, and Agent

This 是……的 pattern highlights time, place, manner or the agent of an event treated as established background. That background may be known already or taken for granted in the conversation; it need not have been explicitly stated by both people. This lesson starts with past-event examples.

Subject / Topic 是 Time / Place / Manner Verb Phrase 的

Example sentence

你是几点到公司的？

Nǐ shì jǐ diǎn dào gōngsī de?

What time did you get to the office?

Used when the listener is already at the office; emphasizes the time of arrival.

## What the 是……的 (shì...de) Pattern Does

In the HSK 2 grammar outline, the special sentence pattern “是……的”句1 (shì...de sentence 1) covers emphasizing four specific elements of an event: time (时间), place (地点), manner (方式), and the agent or doer of the action (动作者).

To use this pattern naturally, you must understand the situation it requires. You do not use 是……的 (shì...de) simply to announce that something happened in the past. Instead, you use it when the core action is already known, visible, or presupposed in the conversation, and you want to shine a spotlight on a specific circumstance surrounding that action.

For the basic patterns below, put 是 before the focused detail and 的 at the end. A related common order puts 的 before a following object, as in 我是在网上买的这本书. Learn the full sentence rather than treating every non-final 的 as wrong.

## Emphasizing Time, Place, and Manner

In standard Chinese word order, expressions of time, place, and manner appear after the subject and before the main verb. When you wrap this part of the sentence in 是……的 (shì...de), the structure stays very consistent: 是 (shì) goes right before the time, place, or manner phrase, followed by the verb phrase, with 的 (de) at the end.

Subject / Topic 是 Time / Place / Manner Verb Phrase 的

1. Emphasizing Time (时间): Suppose your colleague is already sitting at their desk in the office. You both know they arrived. To ask when that arrival happened, or to state the exact time, place 是 (shì) before the time word.

你是几点到公司的？

Nǐ shì jǐ diǎn dào gōngsī de?

What time did you get to the office?

Used when the listener is already at the office; emphasizes the time of arrival.

我是八点半到的。

Wǒ shì bā diǎn bàn dào de.

I got here at 8:30.

Answers the time-focused question; the destination (the office) is already understood from context and can be omitted.

Suppose a friend already knows you bought this item of clothing and asks where. The clothing can be the topic, with 是 before the location phrase 在那个商店. Merely seeing new clothes would not prove that the wearer bought them.

这件衣服是在那个商店买的。

Zhè jiàn yīfu shì zài nàge shāngdiàn mǎi de.

This piece of clothing was bought at that shop.

Emphasizes the location where the known purchase took place.

3. Emphasizing Manner (方式): At HSK 2, manner most commonly involves how someone traveled (such as by taxi, by bus, or by plane) or how an action was carried out, often asked with 怎么 (zěnme, how). Once again, you already know they went to the station; you are asking about or stating the method of transport.

你们是怎么去火车站的？

Nǐmen shì zěnme qù huǒchēzhàn de?

How did you go to the train station?

Asks about the manner or mode of transport for a trip that already happened.

我们是坐出租车去的。

Wǒmen shì zuò chūzūchē qù de.

We went by taxi.

Emphasizes the manner of transport (taking a taxi).

## Emphasizing the Agent (Doer of the Action)

4. Emphasizing the Agent (动作者): When you want to highlight who performed an action, the thing affected by the action is frequently placed at the beginning of the sentence as the known topic. Then, 是 (shì) is placed directly in front of the person (the agent) who did the action, followed by the verb and 的 (de).

Topic (Receiver of Action) 是 Agent (Doer) Verb 的

For example, if dinner is already on the table, everyone knows dinner has been cooked. If you want to point out that it was Dad (and not someone else) who cooked it, you put 是 (shì) right before 爸爸 (bàba).

今天的晚饭是爸爸做的。

Jīntiān de wǎnfàn shì bàba zuò de.

Today's dinner was made by Dad. / It was Dad who made today's dinner.

Emphasizes the agent (Dad) who performed the known action of cooking dinner.

- Asking questions: You do not need to change word order to ask about these details. Simply put the question word—such as 几点 (jǐ diǎn, what time), 在哪儿 (zài nǎr, where), 怎么 (zěnme, how), or 谁 (shéi, who)—into the exact slot after 是 (shì).

- Spoken omission: In positive statements, speakers sometimes omit 是 (shì) if the emphasis is clear from context, though keeping both 是 (shì) and 的 (de) is the clearest way to signal focus.

- Negation: When correcting a detail (for example, saying it was not Dad who cooked it, or you did not come by bus), negate the pattern by replacing 是 (shì) with 不是 (bú shì), while keeping 的 (de) at the end.

## Useful Contrast: 是……的 (shì...de) vs. Reporting an Event with 了 (le)

A common point of confusion for learners is deciding between a sentence with 了 (le) and a 是……的 (shì...de) sentence, because both often translate into the English past tense. The difference is not tense, but information structure.

爸爸做了今天的晚饭。

Bàba zuò le jīntiān de wǎnfàn.

Dad made today's dinner.

Standard event report using 了 (le); reports that the action happened rather than singling out the detail of a presupposed event.

In the simple teaching contrast, 爸爸做了今天的晚饭 reports the event, while 今天的晚饭是爸爸做的 identifies Dad against an established background. But 了 alone does not force the whole event to be new information; context and stress can also focus Dad in an ordinary event sentence.

- Use a standard verb + 了 (le) sentence when your main goal is to tell the listener that an action took place.

- Use 是……的 (shì...de) when the listener already knows the action took place, and your main goal is to specify or ask about when, where, how, or by whom it was done.

## Frequently asked questions

**Does 是 (shì) still mean 'to be' inside a 是……的 (shì...de) sentence?**

Rather than acting as a simple 'A equals B' verb, 是 (shì) works together with final 的 (de) as a framing device to highlight the word or phrase immediately following 是 (shì). It often corresponds to English cleft sentences like 'It was at 8:30 that...' or 'It was Dad who...', though natural English usually just stresses the word in speech.

**How do I know where to put 是 (shì) in the sentence?**

Put 是 (shì) directly in front of the specific piece of information you want to emphasize—right before the time phrase, the place phrase, the manner phrase, or the doer of the action.

**Can I use this 是……的 (shì...de) pattern for actions that haven't happened yet?**

The basic event-detail use taught here normally looks back on an established event. Do not use it merely as a past-tense formula. Similar 是……的 sentences can discuss an agreed future arrangement, such as 明天我是坐飞机去的; they assert or contrast a plan rather than report an already completed trip. Context distinguishes the uses.
