# Using 几 for an Approximate Number

几 can express an imprecise, usually small number when the speaker does not need or know the exact count. Learn its common position before a measure word, and use context to distinguish an estimate from a question asking for a count.

（ Optional 十 or 二十…九十 in the simple two-digit forms here ）几 measure word noun

Example sentence

我们还需要几把椅子。

Wǒmen hái xūyào jǐ bǎ yǐzi.

We still need a few chairs.

Correct approximate statement; 几 gives an inexact count.

## Meaning: a small, inexact number

The outline places this point under number expressions and specifies using 几 to express an approximate number. In ordinary conversation, 几 often suggests a small, limited count, but the exact range depends on the noun and situation. It does not give a precise total. If the exact count matters, use a specific number instead.

我们还需要几把椅子。

Wǒmen hái xūyào jǐ bǎ yǐzi.

We still need a few chairs.

Correct approximate statement; 几 gives an inexact count.

We still need a few chairs. The speaker knows the need is more than one, but does not state the count.

## Forming an approximate quantity

Start with 几 + measure word + noun: 几本书 means a few books. In simple two-digit forms, a preceding 十 or 二十…九十 creates a different range: 十几本书 is eleven to nineteen books; 二十几本书 is twenty-one to twenty-nine. Do not place just any numeral before 几: 三几本书 is not the ordinary standard form for “a few books.”

（ Optional 十 or 二十…九十 in the simple two-digit forms here ）几 measure word noun

- 几把椅子 counts chairs with 把.

- 几本书 counts books with 本.

- 几分钟 refers to a few minutes.

桌子上有几本书。

Zhuōzi shàng yǒu jǐ běn shū.

There are a few books on the table.

Correct approximate statement; 几本书 is not an exact total.

我等了几分钟。

Wǒ děng le jǐ fēnzhōng.

I waited a few minutes.

Correct approximate duration; the exact length is unstated.

## Use it when precision is unnecessary

Use 几 when giving a rough count in a practical conversation, such as describing how long something took, what is present, or how many items are needed. The estimate should fit the context: a few minutes may be a short wait, while a few chairs may be enough for a small group. 几 itself does not tell the listener the exact count.

他几天以后回来。

Tā jǐ tiān yǐhòu huílai.

He will come back in a few days.

Correct approximate time expression.

He will come back in a few days. Here 几 modifies the time unit 天, so the time is approximate.

## Estimate, exact count, or question?

Compare the purpose of the whole utterance. 你买了几张票？ asks for a count, while 你能给我几张纸吗？ asks someone to give you a few sheets; in the latter, 几 remains an approximate quantity. A question mark or 吗 alone does not turn every 几 into “how many.”

- Estimate: 几本书 means an unspecified small number of books.

- Exact count: 三本书 means three books.

- Question: 你买了几张票？ asks how many tickets you bought; it is not an approximate statement.

你买了几张票？

Nǐ mǎi le jǐ zhāng piào?

How many tickets did you buy?

Correct question. Here 几 asks for the count rather than giving an estimate.

Before using 几, ask whether you are reporting an estimate or asking for missing information. If the listener needs the exact count, state the number.

## A practical check

Choose 几 for an approximate count when the exact number is unnecessary. Put it before the appropriate unit, such as 把, 本, 分钟 or 天. Check what the speaker is asking or asserting, rather than classifying it from punctuation alone. Use an exact numeral when precision is needed; with 十几 or 二十几, keep the larger number range in mind.

## Frequently asked questions

**Does 几 always mean exactly the same number?**

No. It signals an inexact count, and the likely range depends on the item and context. Use a specific numeral when precision matters.

**Can 几 appear in a question?**

Yes, with different functions. 你买了几张票？ asks how many; 你能给我几张纸吗？ requests a few sheets. The scope of the question and the context determine whether 几 asks for a count or supplies an approximate one.
