# HSK 2 Fixed Phrase: Expressing "Already" and Emphasis with 都……了

While beginners first learn 都 as 'all' or 'both', the fixed frame 都……了 means 'already' with an added tone of surprise, urgency, or mild complaint.

都 Time / Quantity / State 了

Example sentence

都十一点了，快去睡觉吧。

dōu shíyī diǎn le, kuài qù shuìjiào ba.

It's already eleven o'clock—hurry and go to sleep.

Shows urgency: the speaker uses 都……了 around the clock time to justify telling the listener to go to bed.

A common mistake

× 都他八十岁了，身体还很好。

dōu tā bāshí suì le, shēntǐ hái hěn hǎo.

Intended: He is already eighty years old, and his health is still very good.

For the intended “he is already eighty” pattern, put 他 before 都: 他都八十岁了. The issue is the subject order in this sentence.

Corrected example: 他都八十岁了，身体还很好。

## What 都……了 Means and Why Speakers Use It

At the beginner stage, learners first meet 都 as an adverb meaning "all" or "both." However, in the Level 2 syllabus outline under fixed phrases (固定短语), the paired frame 都……了 has a distinct grammatical function: it means "already" and highlights that a time, amount, age, or situation has reached a notable or unexpected point.

Unlike a simple, flat report of facts, 都……了 carries the speaker's attitude. Depending on the situation, it expresses mild surprise, urgency, impatience, or a gentle reminder that something should have happened by now. Because it sets up an emotional reaction or practical conclusion, it very frequently leads into a second clause such as a suggestion, question, or observation.

妹妹都这么高了！

mèimei dōu zhème gāo le!

Little sister is already this tall!

Expresses pleasant surprise at a noticeable change in state.

## Sentence Structure and Common Patterns

The fixed phrase wraps around the predicate or the phrase indicating time, duration, age, quantity, or degree. If the sentence has an explicit subject or topic, that subject stands before 都. The particle 了 closes the frame at the end of the clause.

都 Time / Quantity / State 了

Subject (optional) 都 Time / Quantity / State 了， Follow-up Clause

- Clock time, dates, or age: pointing out that it is later than expected or that someone has reached a notable age.

- Verb + duration or quantity: emphasizing how long an action has gone on or how many times it has happened.

- Degree or state: showing surprise at how much a situation has changed (often paired with words like 这么 or 那么).

我都等了半个小时了，公共汽车还没来。

wǒ dōu děng le bàn gè xiǎoshí le, gōnggòng qìchē hái méi lái.

I have already waited for half an hour, and the bus still hasn't come.

Expresses mild impatience over a long duration.

他今天都喝了三杯咖啡了。

tā jīntiān dōu hē le sān bēi kāfēi le.

He has already drunk three cups of coffee today.

Highlights that the quantity (three cups) is high.

The first 了 after the verb presents a realised action or an elapsed portion of it; it does not by itself say that the whole activity has ended. The final 了 presents the situation as current or changed. In the waiting example, the half-hour has elapsed and the waiting may continue.

## Useful Contrasts: 都……了 vs. 已经……了 and Plural 都

Both 都……了 and 已经……了 can translate into English as "already," and in many spoken contexts they overlap. The key difference is tone. 已经……了 can state an objective fact calmly with no emotional subtext. 都……了 feels subjective and emphatic—it implies "it is already this late/much (and you should notice what that means)." They can also be combined as 都已经……了 for even stronger emphasis.

现在已经十一点了。

xiànzài yǐjīng shíyī diǎn le.

It is already eleven o'clock now.

Contrast example: states the time more neutrally with 已经……了, without the strong push or complaint implied by 都十一点了.

Do not identify the meaning from subject number alone. Even a singular subject can occur with “all” referring to objects or an earlier set: 这些书，我都看了 means “I have read all these books”. In the time, age, and degree examples here, the context supports emphatic “already”. Read the whole sentence and the expression in 都’s scope.

他们都到了。

tāmen dōu dào le.

They have all arrived.

Contrast example: here 都 quantifies the plural subject 他们 ('all of them') rather than expressing 'already with surprise'.

## Common Learner Mistake: Placing the Subject After 都

Because English allows "already" or "even now" at the very beginning of a sentence ("Already he is eighty years old"), learners sometimes place 都 before the subject. In Mandarin, 都 is an adverb and must stand after the subject and before the predicate or time/age phrase.

他都八十岁了，身体还很好。

tā dōu bāshí suì le, shēntǐ hái hěn hǎo.

He is already eighty years old, and his health is still very good.

The subject 他 precedes 都, with his age inside the 都...了 frame.

Syllabus note: The classification of 都……了 as a Level 2 fixed phrase comes from the 2025-11 HSK outline (labeled for 2026-07 implementation). This establishes the teaching scope here, not which exam version a specific test center administers on your test date.

## Frequently asked questions

**Can I drop 了 when using 都 to mean 'already'?**

Keep 了 when practising the fixed 都...了 pattern here. Do not infer that every occurrence of 都 without final 了 must mean “all”: 都 has other emphatic uses, and the full context determines its function.

**Can 都 and 已经 be used together in the same sentence?**

Yes. Native speakers frequently combine them as 都已经……了 (for example, watching the clock and saying that it is already very late). The combination keeps the 'already' meaning of 已经 and adds the strong emotional emphasis of 都.

**Does 都……了 always express a complaint?**

Not always. While it is very common in mild complaints about waiting or being late, it is just as natural for pleasant surprise or admiration, such as marveling at how tall a child has grown or how healthy an elderly relative is.
