# HSK 2 Scope Adverb 一起: Expressing Joint Actions in Chinese

一起 commonly expresses doing an activity together. In the adverb pattern taught here, it precedes the action phrase. Joint participation does not always require the same physical location, and the participants may be clear from context.

Plural Subject 一起 Verb Phrase

Example sentence

我们一起吃午饭吧。

wǒmen yīqǐ chī wǔfàn ba.

Let's eat lunch together.

The plural pronoun 我们 provides the multiple participants required by 一起.

A common mistake

× 我们去学校一起。

wǒmen qù xuéxiào yīqǐ.

Intended: We go to school together.

Incorrect. The scope adverb 一起 cannot be placed at the end of the clause after the verb phrase 去学校. Replace with 我们一起去学校。

Corrected example: 我们一起去学校。

## What 一起 Means as a Scope Adverb

In the HSK 2 grammar outline, 一起 is classified as a scope adverb (范围副词). Its core function is to bind multiple participants into a single, shared action. When you use 一起, you state that the people involved do the activity in the same group, at the same time, or toward the same goal—corresponding to the English word 'together'.

In the joint-people examples here, more than one person participates, but a companion can be understood from context rather than named. In other uses, 一起 can group things rather than people: 我想一起买这两本书 means one speaker wants to buy the two books together.

我们一起吃午饭吧。

wǒmen yīqǐ chī wǔfàn ba.

Let's eat lunch together.

The plural pronoun 我们 provides the multiple participants required by 一起.

## Core Sentence Structures and Word Order

In Chinese, adverbs modify the predicate from the front. Therefore, 一起 always appears after the subject (and any time expressions or partner phrases) and directly before the main verb phrase. There are two primary ways to introduce the participants.

Plural Subject 一起 Verb Phrase

A plural subject can identify the participants. With a singular subject, 和 or 跟 can name a companion explicitly, as in 我和朋友一起学习. If the shared group is already clear, a speaker can also say 我也想一起去 without repeating the companion.

Subject A 和 / 跟 Subject B 一起 Verb Phrase

我常常和朋友一起学习汉语。

wǒ chángcháng hé péngyou yīqǐ xuéxí Hànyǔ.

I often study Chinese together with my friends.

Here a singular subject (我) is linked with a partner (朋友) using 和 before 一起.

Citation pinyin here is yīqǐ. In ordinary connected speech, 一 before the third-tone 起 changes to fourth tone: yìqǐ. Do not change it to second tone; that is the usual change before a fourth-tone syllable.

## Combining 一起 with Modal Verbs and Negation

When a sentence includes modal verbs (such as 想, 要, or 可以), adverbs of frequency (such as 常常), or negation words (such as 不 or 没), those elements normally stand before 一起. This keeps 一起 tightly attached to the action verb it modifies.

Plural Subject Modal Verb or Negator 一起 Verb Phrase

下班以后，我们可以一起回家。

xiàbān yǐhòu, wǒmen kěyǐ yīqǐ huí jiā.

After finishing work, we can go home together.

The modal verb 可以 precedes 一起.

When negating a sentence with 不一起, the speaker usually means that the participants are not doing the activity jointly—they might still go separately, or they have chosen not to go as a group.

今天他们不一起去商店。

jīntiān tāmen bù yīqǐ qù shāngdiàn.

Today they are not going to the store together.

The negator 不 is placed before 一起 to negate the joint nature of the trip.

## Useful Contrast: 一起 vs. 都

Both 一起 and 都 are scope adverbs used with multiple people, which often causes learners to confuse them. However, they describe very different relationships between the subjects and the verb.

- 都 ('both' or 'all') means a statement holds true for each member of the group individually. They do not need to be in the same place or acting at the same time.

- 一起 presents a shared activity or coordinated effort. Participants need not always occupy the same physical place or act at exactly the same moment, as collaboration can also be remote or spread over time.

- To say that a preference or identity applies to every member, use 都, as in 都喜欢看电影. To say they watch as a shared activity, use 一起看电影. Choose according to the intended relation; do not treat a list of state verbs as a universal ban on 一起.

我和弟弟都喜欢看电影。

wǒ hé dìdi dōu xǐhuan kàn diànyǐng.

My younger brother and I both like watching movies.

都 indicates that the preference applies to both people, even if they watch movies separately.

周末我和弟弟一起看电影。

zhōumò wǒ hé dìdi yīqǐ kàn diànyǐng.

On the weekend, my younger brother and I watch a movie together.

一起 shows that the two siblings perform the action of watching as a shared activity.

## Common Learner Error: English Word Order Transfer

A common mistake English speakers make with 一起 is placing it at the very end of the sentence, mirroring the English word 'together' (as in 'We go to school together'). In Chinese, an adverb cannot be placed after the verb and object that it modifies.

× 我们去学校一起。

wǒmen qù xuéxiào yīqǐ.

Intended: We go to school together.

Incorrect. The scope adverb 一起 cannot be placed at the end of the clause after the verb phrase 去学校. Replace with 我们一起去学校。

Corrected example: 我们一起去学校。

我们一起去学校。

wǒmen yīqǐ qù xuéxiào.

We go to school together.

Correct replacement: 一起 is placed directly before the verb phrase 去学校.

Note that in other grammar structures outside this scope adverb item, 一起 can appear after a preposition like 在 (as in 在一起, meaning 'to be together'). However, when modifying an action verb such as 去 (to go), 吃 (to eat), or 学习 (to study), 一起 must stand before the verb phrase.

## Frequently asked questions

**Can 都 and 一起 be used in the same sentence?**

Yes. With two or more participants in the shared activity, 他们都一起去 can mean “They are all going together”, with 都 before 一起. Both the distributive “all” meaning and the joint-action meaning are present.

**If I already use 和 or 跟, do I still need 一起?**

No. 我和朋友去学校 or 我跟朋友去学校 can be complete without 一起. Add 一起 to make the joint action explicit. 都 has a different meaning—“both/all”—and is not automatically a replacement for “together”.

**Does this HSK 2 classification apply to every HSK exam session?**

The HSK 2 classification for the scope adverb 一起 comes from the 2025-11 syllabus edition (labeled for 2026-07 implementation). Always verify with your official test center which syllabus edition is administered for your booked exam.
