# HSK 1 Nouns of Locality: 上, 下, 里, 外, 前, and 后

In Chinese, basic words for position such as 上 (on/above), 下 (under/below), 里 (inside), 外 (outside), 前 (in front/before), and 后 (behind/after) are classified as nouns of locality (方位名词). Unlike English prepositions, they are placed after the reference noun to show where something is located or when an action happens.

reference noun noun of locality (上/下/里/外/前/后)

Example sentence

书在桌子上。

shū zài zhuōzi shàng .

The book is on the table.

上 follows the reference noun 桌子 (table) to show location on its surface.

A common mistake

× 我的手机在里书包。

wǒ de shǒujī zài lǐ shūbāo .

Intended: My mobile phone is in the schoolbag.

Incorrect: The noun of locality 里 is placed before the reference noun 书包, copying English word order ('in the schoolbag'). Replace with 书包里.

Corrected example: 我的手机在书包里。

## What Are Single-Syllable Nouns of Locality?

In the HSK 1 grammar outline, the six words 上 (shàng), 下 (xià), 里 (lǐ), 外 (wài), 前 (qián), and 后 (hòu) are grouped under nouns as nouns of locality (方位名词, fāngwèi míngcí). In English, words like 'on', 'under', 'in', and 'outside' are prepositions that come before a noun. In Chinese, these words function as localizers that attach to the end of another noun to turn an ordinary object into a specific location.

- 上 (shàng): on, on top of, or above a surface.

- 下 (xià): under, below, or beneath an object.

- 里 (lǐ): in, inside, or within an enclosed space or container.

- 外 (wài): outside or beyond a boundary.

- 前 (qián): in front of a reference point in space, or before a point in time.

- 后 (hòu): behind a reference point in space, or after a point in time.

## Basic Structure: Reference Noun First, Localizer Second

The golden rule for Chinese nouns of locality is that the reference object comes first, and the position word comes second. Where English thinks 'in the room', Chinese orders the idea as 'room-inside'.

reference noun noun of locality (上/下/里/外/前/后)

To say that someone or something is at a location, speakers usually place the verb or preposition 在 (zài, to be at) before the entire noun-plus-localizer phrase. The word 在 marks the existence or location as a whole, while the noun of locality specifies the exact side or surface (such as on top, underneath, or inside).

subject 在 reference noun noun of locality (上/下/里/外/前/后)

书在桌子上。

shū zài zhuōzi shàng .

The book is on the table.

上 follows the reference noun 桌子 (table) to show location on its surface.

小猫在椅子下。

xiǎomāo zài yǐzi xià .

The kitten is under the chair.

下 follows 椅子 (chair) to indicate the space underneath.

他在房间里休息。

tā zài fángjiān lǐ xiūxi .

He is resting in the room.

在房间里 (in the room) is placed before the main verb 休息 (to rest) to show where the action takes place.

窗外有人。

chuāng wài yǒu rén .

There is someone outside the window.

外 attaches directly to the single-syllable noun 窗 (window) to form a location subject before 有 (there is).

## Using 前 and 后 for Time as Well as Space

While 上, 下, 里, and 外 in beginner sentences mainly describe physical space or containers, 前 (qián) and 后 (hòu) are very frequently used after a quantity of time, a time word, or an action phrase to mean 'before/ago' and 'after'. The word order remains identical to the spatial pattern: the time reference comes first, followed directly by 前 or 后.

time span or event 前 / 后

他三天前来了北京。

tā sān tiān qián lái le Běijīng .

He came to Beijing three days ago.

前 follows the time span 三天 (three days) to mean 'ago'.

我们下课后去吃饭。

wǒmen xiàkè hòu qù chīfàn .

We are going to eat after class finishes.

后 follows the event phrase 下课 (finish class) to mean 'after'.

## Important Limits and Natural Pairing Habits

Because these six items are single-syllable localizers, they are much more restricted in how they combine with nouns than two-syllable position words (such as 上面 or 前面). Keep two practical limits in mind when building sentences:

- Natural combinations vary. Short forms such as 门前 (in front of the door) and 窗外 (outside the window) are common. After longer reference nouns, forms such as 学校前面 and 房间外面 are often useful for beginners; shorter combinations such as 学校外 are also natural. Learn common pairings rather than treating noun length as a strict grammatical rule.

- Proper geographic names: Concrete countries and cities like 中国 (China) or 北京 (Beijing) already function as place words on their own after 在. You say 在北京 (in Beijing), not 在北京里.

Teaching scope note: This article covers the six single-syllable nouns of locality listed in the HSK 1 outline (edition 2025-11). Syllabus level labels describe the reference outline structure and do not confirm which exam version is administered at a specific test center.

## Common Learner Mistake: Copying English Preposition Order

A common mistake for English speakers is treating 里, 上, or 下 as direct equivalents of 'in', 'on', or 'under' and placing them right after 在—before the reference noun. In Chinese, a single-syllable noun of locality cannot precede the noun it modifies.

× 我的手机在里书包。

wǒ de shǒujī zài lǐ shūbāo .

Intended: My mobile phone is in the schoolbag.

Incorrect: The noun of locality 里 is placed before the reference noun 书包, copying English word order ('in the schoolbag'). Replace with 书包里.

Corrected example: 我的手机在书包里。

我的手机在书包里。

wǒ de shǒujī zài shūbāo lǐ .

My mobile phone is in the schoolbag.

Correct replacement: The reference noun 书包 comes first, followed by the localizer 里.

## Frequently asked questions

**If 在 already means 'at/in/on', why do I also need 上 or 里?**

In Chinese, ordinary object nouns like 桌子 (table) or 书包 (schoolbag) are not place words by themselves. The verb or preposition 在 requires a location after it. Adding a noun of locality like 上 or 里 turns an ordinary object into a valid location ('table-top', 'bag-interior') and clarifies whether you mean on, under, or inside the object.

**Do I put 的 between the noun and a single-syllable localizer like 上 or 里?**

No. Single-syllable nouns of locality (上, 下, 里, 外, 前, 后) attach directly to the preceding noun without 的. For example, say 桌子上 (on the table), never 桌子的上.
