# HSK 1 Temporal Measure Words: 日, 号, 岁, 点, 分, 年, and 天

In Mandarin, words for days, years, age, and clock units act directly as temporal measure words (时量词). They combine straight with numbers without needing a general classifier like 个 in between.

number 日 / 号 / 岁 / 点 / 分 / 年 / 天

Example sentence

今天是五月八号。

jīntiān shì wǔyuè bā hào .

Today is May 8th.

Uses 号 for the spoken day of the month.

A common mistake

× 我学习汉语一个年了。

wǒ xuéxí Hànyǔ yī gè nián le .

Intended: I have been studying Chinese for one year.

Incorrect: 年 is already a temporal measure word and cannot take the classifier 个 before it. Replace with 我学习汉语一年了。

Corrected example: 我学习汉语一年了。

## How Temporal Measure Words Work

In the HSK 1 syllabus outline, seven core words are grouped under temporal measure words (时量词): 日, 号, 岁, 点, 分, 年, and 天. Unlike ordinary nouns such as books or apples, which require a separate measure word between the number and the noun, these seven units are already measure words themselves. Because they have built-in measuring function, a numeral attaches directly to them.

number 日 / 号 / 岁 / 点 / 分 / 年 / 天

Even though these seven items sit in a single grammatical category, they are not interchangeable. Some mark a specific point on a calendar or clock, while others count a span of time or a person's age. Choosing the right word depends on whether you are naming a date, measuring a duration, stating age, or reading the clock.

## Calendar Dates vs. Counted Duration: 号, 日, 天, and 年

Beginners often mix up the words for days because English uses the word "day" for both calendar dates and lengths of time. Mandarin separates these functions cleanly across 号, 日, and 天, while using 年 for years.

- 号 marks the day of the month in everyday spoken Mandarin (for example, the eighth of May).

- 日 also marks the day of the month, appearing frequently in written notices, formal schedules, or fixed expressions.

- 天 counts a quantity of days as a duration (such as three days), and is not used after a month name to give a calendar date.

- 年 counts a number of years (such as one year) and also names calendar years directly after digits.

今天是五月八号。

jīntiān shì wǔyuè bā hào .

Today is May 8th.

Uses 号 for the spoken day of the month.

五月八日见。

wǔyuè bā rì jiàn .

See you on May 8th.

Uses 日 for the calendar date, common in written or slightly more formal contexts.

When you move from naming a date on the calendar to counting how many days or years an action lasts, switch to 天 for days and 年 for years.

他在北京住三天。

tā zài Běijīng zhù sān tiān .

He is staying in Beijing for three days.

Uses 天 directly after the number 三 to express a multi-day duration.

我学习汉语一年了。

wǒ xuéxí Hànyǔ yī nián le .

I have been studying Chinese for one year.

Correct replacement: attaches 一 directly to 年 without inserting 个.

## Age and Clock Time: 岁, 点, and 分

In English, age is often expressed with the word "years" ("five years old"). In Mandarin, you do not use 年 to state someone's age. Instead, use the dedicated temporal measure word 岁 right after the number. Note that in simple age predicates, the number plus 岁 can form the predicate directly without needing the verb 是.

我儿子今年五岁。

wǒ érzi jīnnián wǔ suì .

My son is five years old this year.

Uses 岁 directly after the number 五 to state age.

For reading the clock, 点 marks the hour (o'clock) and 分 marks the minutes past the hour. When both appear together, the hour phrase comes first, followed immediately by the minute phrase.

hour number 点 minute number 分

现在是上午九点十分。

xiànzài shì shàngwǔ jiǔ diǎn shí fēn .

It is 9:10 a.m. now.

Combines 点 for the hour and 分 for the minutes.

Keep in mind that 点 tells the point on the clock (such as nine o'clock). If you want to say a duration of hours (such as "two hours"), you typically use a noun like 小时 with 个, which lies outside this specific set of direct temporal measure words.

## Common Learner Mistake: Adding 个 Before 年 or 天

Learners sometimes overapply the common classifier 个 to time units. A duration in months normally uses 个, as in 三个月. With 星期, 个 is optional: 一个星期 and 一星期 both work. Neither pattern means that 年 or 天 needs 个.

However, because 年 and 天 are already measure words themselves, placing 个 in front of them creates an ungrammatical double measure word construction.

Always remove 个 before 年, 天, 岁, 日, 号, 点, and 分 so the number connects directly to the temporal measure word.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is there a meaning difference between 号 and 日 in dates?**

No, both refer to the calendar day of the month. 号 is the standard choice in everyday conversation, while 日 is preferred in written Chinese, official announcements, and formal reading.

**Can I use 年 instead of 岁 to say how old someone is?**

No. Use 岁 after a number to state a person's age, and reserve 年 for counting durations of years or naming calendar years.

**Do I always have to say 分 when telling the time?**

When stating whole hours (like nine o'clock), you only use 点. When minutes are included, HSK 1 learners can reliably include 分 after the minute number, though in casual speech native speakers sometimes drop 分 when the minute number is ten or more.
