# HSK 1 Complements of Quantity 1: Verb + Action-Measure Complement (动词+动量补语)

In Mandarin Chinese, to state how many times an action occurs, you place a number and an action measure word directly after the verb. This structure is listed in the HSK 1 outline as Complements of Quantity 1: Verb + Action-Measure Complement (数量补语1：动词+动量补语).

Subject Verb Aspect Particle (了 / 过) Number Action Measure Word

Example sentence

请看一次。

qǐng kàn yī cì .

Please look once.

Basic imperative sentence: the action-measure complement 一次 (once) directly follows the verb 看 (look).

A common mistake

× 我见过一次他。

wǒ jiàn guo yī cì tā .

Intended: I have met him once.

Incorrect for the neutral order practised here: place a personal pronoun such as 他 before the action-measure complement 一次. Replace with 我见过他一次。

Corrected example: 我见过他一次。

## What Is an Action-Measure Complement?

When you want to say how many times someone performs an action—such as watching a movie once, listening to a recording twice, or visiting a city three times—Mandarin uses a structure called the action-measure complement (动量补语, dòngliàng bǔyǔ). In the supplied HSK 1 syllabus outline, this point is categorized under sentence constituents and complements as 数量补语1：动词+动量补语 (Quantity Complement 1: Verb + Action-Measure Complement). Note that level labels reflect the supplied syllabus outline rather than a guarantee about which exam version a given test center currently administers.

In English, frequency expressions like once or three times usually sit at the very end of the clause. In Mandarin, a phrase that counts the occurrences of a verb acts as a complement: an element placed after the main verb to complete or quantify information about the action. At the beginner level, the most essential action measure word is 次 (cì), which translates to time or occasion.

## Basic Structure Without an Object

In its simplest form, when there is no object following the verb, the number and the action measure word go immediately after the verb. If the sentence includes an aspect particle such as 了 (le, indicating completion) or 过 (guo, indicating past experience), that particle attaches directly to the verb before the number and action measure word.

Subject Verb Aspect Particle (了 / 过) Number Action Measure Word

请看一次。

qǐng kàn yī cì .

Please look once.

Basic imperative sentence: the action-measure complement 一次 (once) directly follows the verb 看 (look).

我听了两次。

wǒ tīng le liǎng cì .

I listened twice.

With a completed action, the aspect particle 了 attaches directly to the verb 听 before the complement 两次 (twice).

Remember to use 两 (liǎng) rather than 二 (èr) when saying twice (两次, liǎng cì) before a measure word.

## Where to Place the Object

When the verb takes an object (such as a place, a book, or a person), word order depends on what kind of noun phrase the object is. This is the main area where English speakers make word-order errors.

- General nouns and place names usually go after the action-measure complement.

- Personal pronouns (such as 我, 你, 他, 她, 我们) must go before the action-measure complement, right after the verb and any aspect particle.

Subject Verb Aspect Particle (了 / 过) Number Action Measure Word General / Place Noun Object

我去过一次北京。

wǒ qù guo yī cì Běijīng .

I have been to Beijing once.

The place object 北京 commonly follows the experiential particle 过 and the action-measure complement 一次.

他看了三次那本书。

tā kàn le sān cì nà běn shū .

He read that book three times.

The general noun phrase object 那本书 is placed after the action-measure complement 三次.

Notice how with general nouns or place names above, the action-measure phrase sits between the verb and the object. For a personal-pronoun object, use the neutral order taught here: pronoun before the number and action measure word. Marked conversational focus may follow different patterns; the beginner model is 我见过他一次.

Subject Verb Aspect Particle (了 / 过) Personal Pronoun Object Number Action Measure Word

× 我见过一次他。

wǒ jiàn guo yī cì tā .

Intended: I have met him once.

Incorrect for the neutral order practised here: place a personal pronoun such as 他 before the action-measure complement 一次. Replace with 我见过他一次。

Corrected example: 我见过他一次。

我见过他一次。

wǒ jiàn guo tā yī cì .

I have met him once.

Correct replacement for 我见过一次他: the personal pronoun 他 is placed immediately after 见过 and before the action-measure complement 一次.

While general nouns and place names most commonly follow the complement in everyday HSK 1 sentences, you may also encounter definite nouns or place names placed before the complement when a speaker wants to emphasize or contrast the count. For personal pronouns, however, placing the pronoun before the complement is required.

## Useful Contrast: Counting Actions vs. Counting Objects

Do not confuse an action-measure complement (动量补语) with a regular nominal measure word phrase (名量词) that counts physical objects. Both patterns can look identical on the surface—Verb + 了 + Number + Measure Word + Noun—but their grammatical roles are different.

我买了一本书。

wǒ mǎi le yī běn shū .

I bought one book.

Contrast example: 一本 counts the noun 书 (one book), rather than counting how many times the action of buying occurred.

In the example above, 一本 (yī běn) modifies 书 (shū, book) to tell us how many books were bought; 本 (běn) is a noun measure word. By contrast, in 他看了三次那本书 (Tā kàn le sān cì nà běn shū), 三次 (sān cì) is a complement attached to the verb 看 (kàn, to read), telling us how many times the reading action took place, while 那本书 specifies which book was read.

Scope limit: Action-measure complements count how many times an action happens (such as 一次, once). They do not measure how long an action lasts (such as for three hours or two days), which is taught separately as a time-duration complement (时量补语). Also, while Chinese has other action measure words like 遍 (biàn, a full run-through from start to finish) or 趟 (tàng, a round trip), 次 (cì) is the primary all-purpose action measure word at the HSK 1 level.

## Frequently asked questions

**Can I put 一次 (yī cì) at the beginning of a sentence or before the verb?**

Not when it acts as an action-measure complement answering how many times an action occurred. To quantify the frequency of the verb as a complement, 一次 must go after the verb (for example, 我去过一次). Placing 一次 at the start of a sentence changes the meaning to 'One time / Once upon an occasion...' as a time background rather than a verb complement.

**Where do 了 (le) and 过 (guo) go when using an action-measure complement?**

Aspect particles like 了 and 过 attach directly to the verb, right before the number and action measure word (or before a personal pronoun object). For example, say 看了两次 (watched twice) or 去过一次 (have gone once).

**Why is this grammar point labeled 'Quantity Complement 1' (数量补语1) in the syllabus?**

In the HSK grammar outline, 'Complements of Quantity' (数量补语) is a broad umbrella term that covers different ways of quantifying predicates. Sub-item 1 specifically covers Verb + Action-Measure Complement (动词+动量补语), while later syllabus levels introduce other types, such as time-duration complements and comparative degree quantities.
