# HSK 1 Change of State Aspect: Sentence-Final 了 (了2)

Sentence-final 了2 marks a new or changed situation relative to the relevant context. The reference point is often “now”, but may be in a narrative or the future. It is not a past-tense ending.

clause describing the new state 了

Example sentence

天冷了。

Tiān lěng le.

It has gotten cold.

Earlier the weather was not cold; now a new state of being cold holds.

## What Change of State (变化态) Means

In the HSK Level 1 grammar outline, the change-of-state aspect (变化态) is expressed using the particle 了 placed at the end of a clause, which grammar references often label 了2 to distinguish it from the post-verbal completion marker 了1.

To understand this particle, picture a timeline divided into two phases: Before and Now. Before the transition point, Situation A was true (for example, the weather was warm, or the sky was clear). Across the transition point, Situation B becomes true (the weather is cold, or rain is falling). Adding 了 at the end of the statement tells the listener to focus on this boundary—something that was not true earlier is true now.

The change is relative to the reference point in the conversation or story, not always the moment of speaking. 明年孩子就八岁了 looks ahead to next year; 到那时天已经黑了 describes a changed situation at a narrative time. Begin with the present-time examples below, then keep that broader possibility in mind.

## How to Form Sentences with 了2

Because sentence-final 了 modifies the entire statement rather than just a single action verb, its placement is straightforward: it goes at the very end of the clause. The predicate before it can be an adjective, a verb-object phrase, or a time and age expression.

clause describing the new state 了

天冷了。

Tiān lěng le.

It has gotten cold.

Earlier the weather was not cold; now a new state of being cold holds.

下雨了。

Xià yǔ le.

It's raining now. / It has started to rain.

Marks the transition from not raining to raining at the moment of speaking.

孩子八岁了。

Háizi bā suì le.

The child is eight years old now.

了 highlights eight as the current relevant age or milestone. It does not mean that the birthday must have occurred just now.

Notice how English translations change depending on the predicate—using words like 'has become', 'it is raining now', or 'is eight now'—while Chinese uses the exact same sentence-final 了 to mark the newly reached state.

## Common Situations for Using Sentence-Final 了

At the beginner level, you will rely on sentence-final 了 in four main communicative situations:

- Physical or quality transitions: A person, object, or environment shifts into a new condition, such as getting cold, tired, or dark.

- New events starting: An activity or natural phenomenon begins where it was not happening moments ago, such as rain starting to fall or class beginning.

- Reaching a number, time, or age: Time, price, or age crosses a new threshold.

- Changing a plan or habit with 不: Combining negative 不 with sentence-final 了 shows that someone is stopping an action or deciding not to do something anymore.

subject 不 verb phrase or adjective 了

我不喝茶了。

Wǒ bù hē chá le.

I won't drink tea anymore. / I'm not going to drink tea now.

Combining 不 with sentence-final 了 expresses a change of intention or stopping a previous habit.

## Useful Contrast: Static Fact vs. Changed State

Beginners often wonder whether omitting 了 makes a sentence ungrammatical. In many cases, both sentences are completely grammatical, but they describe different timelines. Compare the previous sentence with its counterpart without 了:

我不喝茶。

Wǒ bù hē chá.

I don't drink tea.

Contrast example without 了: states a general, unchanging habit rather than a change of state.

Without 了, 我不喝茶 can give a general preference or, in context, a simple refusal now. With 了, the speaker signals a change from an earlier habit, ongoing activity or plan. Neither version by itself guarantees a permanent lifelong habit.

In the outline’s basic distinction, post-verbal 了1 presents an action as realized/bounded, while final 了2 updates the situation. “Realized” does not always mean “finished every part”. When 了 is both after the verb and sentence-final, context is needed; do not classify it from position alone.

## Frequently asked questions

**Does sentence-final 了 mean the sentence is in the past tense?**

No. It marks a newly relevant situation at the context’s reference point. Many beginner examples refer to now, such as 下雨了, but 明年孩子就八岁了 refers to a future situation.

**Can sentence-final 了 be used without a verb?**

Yes. Because it attaches to the whole clause to show a new situation, it frequently follows adjectives (such as cold or tall) and nominal expressions like age, time, or days of the week.

**Why do we use 不 with sentence-final 了 instead of 没?**

For a changed intention or habit, 不……了 gives “not doing it now/anymore”. Ordinary 没（有） + Verb without 了1 says an action did not occur. This does not ban final 了 after every predicate with 没有: 他现在没有钱了 means that he no longer has money, a new negative situation.
